I've been into JL Audio for a long time. I guess I bought my first JL subs back in 1995? Anyway, I've tried a lot of different systems in several different cars, always with a different strategy in mind.
The strategy for this car was a little different. Of course I wanted good sound quality and a respectable volume. That's why I chose JL Audio! I'm now married with two kids, so I couldn't give up my back seat. I also needed to retain some of my trunk space. Finally, it needed to come in at a reasonable budget, so as to preserve the peace between my wife and I... :D
In the end I chose JL Audio TR570CXIs in all of the factory locations. I am running them hi-passed at 90Hz off of head unit power. The front imaging was lacking a little something, so I added TR tweeters to the factory "mach460" tweeter pods in the doors. Now my mid and high range frequencies sound GREAT for such a small budget!
I'm a bit of a bass-head, so normally I'd fill up the trunk and fold down the back seat! Now with two little ones under 5 years old, two baby seats keep me from folding down the seat. Also, I couldn't fill up the trunk because I need room for strollers and diaper bags. Last but not least, I've been known to do the occasional drag racing, so the last thing I wanted to do was add 300lbs of audio equipment in the trunk.
I went with one 13W3V3-2 amplified by an A1400. The amp gets its power from a JL Audio 4 gauge amp kit. I built a 1.75' (net) sealed box out of 3/4" MDF for good sound quality with a "tight" response. I ported the back deck between the 5x7s, so I could get some of that sound out of the trunk and into the car. Lastly, I trimmed the box in gray carpet and flush mounted the amp into the spare tire well.
Mission accomplished! The install looks clean, leaves functional space in the trunk, and sounds fantastic! I'm surprised with how clean the system sounds, being a low budget deal. I haven't metered it yet, but I'm guessing 139-140 dB.
Thanks, JL!!!
