Raw Woofer Drivers
The best way to understand JL Audio's nomenclature is to take an example and dissect it:
EXAMPLE: 10W6v2-D4
10
Driver size in inches
For fractional diameters, the fraction is dropped, so a 13 1/2" driver would start with a "13" followed by the driver type designation.
W
Driver type
W : Woofer IB : Infinite Baffle
6v2
Driver Class
Larger numbers typically mean higher performance levels and more power handling. Current classes are Xv2, 0v3, 1v2, 3v3, 6v2 and 7AE for subwoofers. When a "v" is present in the model number, the number following the "v" is the "version number" of the driver line. Example: the W6v2 is the second version of the W6 driver line. "AE" denotes Anniversary Edition.
-D4
Driver impedance
If this last number is preceded by a "D" (as in 10W6v2-D4), the driver has dual voice coils, each with the impedance of the number given.
All IB4 (infinite-baffle) subwoofers were of the 8 ohm variety (essentially IB4-8), and all original W6's are of the dual-6 ohm variety (W6-D6), but the -8 for the IB4's and the -D6 for the W6's were a redundancy and thus were dropped.

Diameter of Largest Driver
Designates the size of the largest driver in the system or the size of the raw driver:
050 : 0.5 inch 075 : 0.75 inch 100 : 1 inch 350 : 3.5 inch 400 : 4 inch 525 : 5.25 inch 570 : 5 x 7 inch 600 : 6 inch 650 : 6.5 inch 690 : 6 x 9 inch
NOTE: In the XR653-CS, the largest driver is 6.5" in diameter and the system uses 3 drivers. Denoting the number of drivers in the system is unique to XR653's model number.

Series Independent Information
TR (coaxials and component sets): The "i" designates that these systems have been engineered to provide enhanced "presence" in the mid-range section of their frequency response curve as well as an increase in broadband efficiency.
VR Coaxials: The "i" designates that these systems have been engineered to provide enhanced "presence" in the mid-range section of their frequency response curve as well as an increase in broadband efficiency.
VR Component Sets: The "i" designates that these systems have been engineered to provide enhanced "presence" in the mid-range section of their frequency response curve as well as an increase in broadband efficiency. Also, the crossover network of these component sets allows the user to adjust the level of the tweeter.
XR (Coaxials and Component sets): The "i" designates that these systems use JL Audio's "intelligent" crossover design. This crossover design allows the user to adjust mid-range presence level, tweeter level and (on the component sets only) gives the system bi-amp/bi-wire capability.
ZR Component Sets: The "i" designates that these systems use JL Audio's "intelligent" crossover design. This crossover design allows the user to adjust mid-range presence level, tweeter level and gives the system bi-amp/bi-wire capability.
